In December (2020), Isaac Smart, a player on our 12U/Pee-Wee C Black team and dear member of our Warhawks family, had his hockey season come to an abrupt and unexpected end. After several weeks of severe headaches and jaw pain, an MRI on December 15th revealed a large mass behind Isaac’s naval cavity, which was later identified as Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Isaac has begun an aggressive treatment regiment of Chemotherapy and a specialized form of radiation therapy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Many across the Waukesha County Youth Hockey Association and the broader youth hockey community have expressed a desire to help and support Isaac and the Smart family in any way possible. For those that are willing and able to contribute, a GoFundMe site has been set-up on behalf of Isaac and his family to help off-set the significant financial burden this diagnosis and treatment plan presents. A link to the site is provided below and can be easily shared via your personal social media platforms. Any contribution is greatly appreciated by the Smart Family and the Warhawks Community.
For the remainder of the 2020-21 season, all WCYHA players will be wearing helmet stickers bearing Isaac’s number 85 and the hashtag #IsaacStrong as a unified display of solidarity and support. The Smart family has conveyed that playing hockey is the number one thing Isaac talks about with his Doctors and Nurses. His desire to get back on the ice provides tremendous and necessary motivation as he endures this battle. Our unified show of support is a small way our Warhawks Family can help to keep his fighting spirit #IsaacStrong!
